Summer is a good time to get a team out of its usual routine.
Not because every meeting needs to become a vacation, but because a different setting can give people room to think, talk and spend time together in ways that rarely happen between emails and calendar alerts.
Edenton is particularly well suited to that kind of corporate retreat. The historic downtown sits on Edenton Bay, and boating, fishing, golf, restaurants and the waterfront are all close enough to become part of the trip without turning the agenda into a transportation exercise. [1]
A good retreat leaves room for serious work — and gives people a reason to look forward to everything around it.
Start Later. Work Better.
If people are driving to Edenton from Raleigh, Richmond, Hampton Roads or elsewhere in North Carolina and Virginia, there is little value in asking everyone to arrive exhausted for an early-morning presentation.
A summer retreat can start around 10:30 or 11:00 AM and still accomplish plenty.
The World Health Organization recommends a 5–10 minute break after approximately 45–60 minutes of meeting time. [2] That makes a useful retreat schedule less about filling every available hour and more about creating focused blocks of work.
Think in 45–50 minute work sessions, not three-hour meetings.
A Sample Summer Day One
10:30 AM — Arrive, grab coffee and settle in
Give everyone time to get here, check messages and shift out of travel mode before asking them to solve anything important.
11:00 AM — Focus Session
Start with the issue that most needs everyone in the same room: strategy, planning, problem-solving or a decision that has been difficult to make remotely.
11:50 AM — Get Up
Walk outside. Stretch your legs. Give everyone ten minutes without another slide.
12:05 PM — Second Focus Session
Use the second block to turn the morning discussion into decisions or next steps.
12:55 PM — Lunch
Stay at Edenton Commons, eat outdoors, or walk downtown for lunch.
Edenton’s historic Broad Street has restaurants and shops within walking distance of the waterfront, making it possible to leave the meeting room without losing half the afternoon getting everyone somewhere else. [3]
Lunch away from the meeting table is part of the schedule, not time lost from it.
2:15 PM — Collaborative Session
Change the format for the afternoon. Break into smaller groups, move to another room or use a more conversational layout.
3:05 PM — Take a Real Break
This might be the perfect time for a waterfront walk. Stanford researchers found that walking increased creative output by an average of 60% compared with sitting. [4]
3:30 PM — Final Work Block
Bring the group back together. Decide what needs to happen next and what can wait until tomorrow.
4:20 PM — Close the Laptops
And now summer in Edenton gets interesting.
Pick Your Afternoon
Not everyone relaxes the same way. A good retreat does not have to force the entire group into one carefully choreographed “team-building activity.”
Edenton gives you choices.
Get on the Water
The Albemarle Queen offers a particularly easy transition from meeting to experience because it operates from Edenton’s downtown waterfront. The paddle boat can also accommodate private events, with space for up to 110 guests for heavy or passed hors d’oeuvres using both the parlor and upper deck. A full bar is available onboard. [5]
That opens up several possibilities: a cruise before dinner, cocktails on the water, or making the boat itself the evening meal.
One of the best summer meeting spaces in Edenton may not be a room at all.
For a smaller group, Edenton also offers kayak and canoe rentals from the harbor, and the surrounding waterways connect to regional paddle trails. [1]
Go Fishing
For a group that would rather trade PowerPoint for fishing rods, the Albemarle Sound and surrounding tributaries offer another option.
Visit Edenton lists local fishing charters as well as public fishing locations including the Chowan River Fishing Pier. The downtown harbor and surrounding waterways make fishing a natural part of the region rather than an activity created specifically for visitors. [1]
A fishing outing could work particularly well for a smaller leadership team or as an optional activity for people staying an additional night.
The best retreat activity may simply be the one your team would choose to do anyway.
Play Nine — or Eighteen
Golf gives a group another way to spend time together without keeping everyone in formal meeting mode.
The Links at Mulberry Hill at Chowan Golf & Country Club is an 18-hole, par-72 Ellis Maples course overlooking the Inner Banks landscape. The club welcomes public players, offers nine- and eighteen-hole play, and accommodates corporate and private group outings. [6]
For a retreat schedule, nine holes can be particularly useful: enough time together to make it feel like an outing without consuming an entire day.
And if half the team loves golf and the other half would rather be on the water? There is no rule saying everyone has to do the same thing.
Dinner Should Feel Like Summer
By evening, nobody needs another agenda.
Have dinner outdoors downtown, find a waterfront patio, or make dinner part of a private Albemarle Queen cruise.
Edenton’s waterfront dining options and compact downtown make it easy to let the day become less structured as it goes along. Visit Edenton highlights locally owned restaurants within walking distance of the harbor, including waterfront and patio options. [3]
The evening is where coworkers have time to become people again.
That informal time can be just as valuable as another scheduled exercise, especially for teams that normally work in different offices, departments or locations.
Day Two: Finish What You Came Here to Do
The second day should not feel like starting over.
9:00 AM — Coffee and an easy start
9:30 AM — Review the Big Decisions
What still makes sense after everyone has had a night to think?
10:20 AM — Break
10:35 AM — Action Session
Turn the good ideas into owners, deadlines and next steps.
11:25 AM — Step Away
11:40 AM — Final Wrap-Up
What was decided? What happens next? What does not need another meeting?
12:30 PM — Lunch
1:30 PM — Head Home
A good retreat should end while people still feel like it was worth the trip.
There is no perfect summer corporate retreat itinerary, and that is part of the point.
Some teams will want more working time. Some will want the boat. Some will choose fishing, golf or an afternoon on their own. Others may discover that the best part of getting away was simply having lunch outside and enough time to finish a conversation.
Start with what your team needs to accomplish, then leave a little room for summer to do the rest.
